Son <strong>fibras<\/strong> alimentarias, como la inulina o los oligosac\u00e1ridos de fructosa, que no pueden descomponerse ni digerirse en el intestino delgado, por lo que llegan intactas al intestino grueso. All\u00ed, sirven de sustrato para las propias bacterias saludables del intestino. Los prebi\u00f3ticos <strong>favorecen el crecimiento de las bifidobacterias y reducen la colonizaci\u00f3n por parte de especies bacterianas potencialmente nocivas<\/strong>. Los prebi\u00f3ticos <strong>bloquean la uni\u00f3n de las bacterias nocivas<\/strong> porque se asemejan a los sitios de uni\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas intestinales. Los microorganismos \u00abmalos\u00bb se adhieren irreversiblemente a los prebi\u00f3ticos y pueden ser eliminados del organismo. As\u00ed, por ejemplo, se reduce el crecimiento de pat\u00f3genos diarreicos como <em><strong>Clostridium difficile<\/strong><\/em> y se reduce la penetraci\u00f3n de g\u00e9rmenes pat\u00f3genos en la mucosa intestinal. Los simbi\u00f3ticos son una <b>combinaci\u00f3n de probi\u00f3ticos y prebi\u00f3ticos<\/b>. Suelen consistir en una o varias cepas bacterianas en combinaci\u00f3n con sustratos \u00fatiles, los prebi\u00f3ticos.\u00a0<\/p><p>Los prebi\u00f3ticos sirven de <b>protecci\u00f3n a las bacterias
