Poich\u00e9 si tratta di sostanze che non riescono a essere scisse e digerite dall\u2019intestino tenue, raggiungono direttamente l\u2019intestino crasso, dove fungono da\u00a0<strong>substrato<\/strong>\u00a0per i batteri intestinali \u201cbuoni\u201d. I prebiotici favoriscono la crescita dei bifidobatteri e contrastano la colonizzazione dell\u2019intestino da parte di batteri potenzialmente pericolosi. I prebiotici\u00a0<strong>impediscono<\/strong>\u00a0inoltre ai batteri patogeni di legarsi grazie alla loro somiglianza alle giunzioni cellulari intestinali. I batteri \u201ccattivi\u201d si legano in modo irreversibile ai prebiotici e vengono successivamente espulsi dal corpo. Ci\u00f2 riduce la proliferazione di agenti patogeni che potrebbero causare diarrea (come il\u00a0<em>Clostridium difficile<\/em>) e previene la penetrazione della\u00a0<strong>mucosa intestinale\u00a0<\/strong>da parte di microrganismi patogeni.
