So prehranske vlaknine, kot sta inulin ali fruktozni oligosaharidi, ki se v tankem \u010drevesju ne razgradijo in ne prebavijo, zato dose\u017eejo debelo \u010drevo v svoji prvotni obliki. Tam slu\u017eijo kot hrana za koristne \u010drevesne bakterije. <strong>Prebiotiki<\/strong> spodbujajo rast <strong>bifidobakterij<\/strong> in omejujejo naselitev potencialno \u0161kodljivih bakterij. Te zni\u017eujejo pH v \u010drevesju, kar pove\u010duje topnost nekaterih mineralov in spodbuja bolj\u0161o absorpcijo kalcija, magnezija, natrija in fosforja. Prebiotiki tudi prepre\u010dujejo vezavo \u0161kodljivih bakterij, saj se ve\u017eejo na mesta na \u010drevesnih celicah, ki so sicer dostopna za te bakterije. Tako se &#8220;slabe&#8221; bakterije nepovratno pove\u017eejo s prebiotiki in se izlo\u010dijo iz telesa. <strong>To zmanj\u0161uje rast povzro\u010diteljev driske<\/strong>, kot je Clostridium difficile, ter prepre\u010duje vdor patogenov v \u010drevesno sluznico.
