Get in Shape with Your Gut

Do you count calories, avoid those chocolate treats, exercise regularly, and still not feel good when you look in the mirror? Discipline alone isn’t enough. Studies show that the composition of the gut microbiome can play a crucial role.

Here you’ll discover how to feel better from the inside out, step by step – and the part your gut plays in it.

I'm trying everything and nothing seems to be working...

When the number on the scales doesn’t go down, the focus quickly shifts to “not enough discipline” or “not enough exercise”.

But the reality is more complex. Alongside diet and lifestyle, many other factors come into play: lack of sleep, stress and trauma, hormones, genetic predisposition, medication, or simply age.

Another important factor that is often overlooked is the gut microbiome. The composition of our gut bacteria influences how many calories we absorb from food and how this affects our comfortable, feel-good weight.

Studies prove certain bacteria promote weight gain

Trillions of bacteria live in the gut. These microorganisms are responsible for more than “just” digestion. Numerous studies confirm that the gut flora of people who are overweight is usually different from that of people of normal weight.

Research has shown that Firmicutes (so-called “fattening” bacteria) clearly predominate in people who are overweight, and that the ratio between “fatteners” and “figure-friendly” bacteria can be shifted by as much as 2,000:1.

Firmicutes
Promote weight gain

If we eat an unbalanced or unhealthy diet, we support the “fattening bacteria”. If there are too many of these “fat-producing bacteria” (aggressive fibre-splitting clostridia from the Firmicutes genus) in the gut, this has a major drawback: studies show that these bacteria actively break down fibre that is actually indigestible and extract energy from it.

This can amount to up to 20% more calories per day, in addition to the energy normally contained in food.

Bacteroidetes
Figure-flattering bacteria

The bacteria that support us on the path towards feeling good in our bodies are scientifically known as Bacteroidetes. These bacteria encapsulate and isolate excess sugar in the gut, which is then transported out of the body with the stool.

The “figure-friendly” bacteria are anaerobic, meaning they cannot survive in an oxygen-rich environment. To keep them thriving in our gut, we therefore need to make it “appealing” for them to stay – for example through a fibre-rich diet. One of their “favourite foods” is apple pectin. This valuable dietary fibre also has the property of swelling in the stomach and intestines, thereby “filling” the digestive tract and giving you a fuller feeling.

Gut Balance - From Within

If we eat an unbalanced or unhealthy diet, we support the “fattening bacteria”, creating an imbalance in the gut with too many Firmicutes and too few Bacteroidetes.

This imbalance can be responsible for stubborn fat stores. It is therefore essential to maintain gut balance, which can also help achieve balance on the scales.

3 Steps for your Feel-Good Figure

1. Restore balance in the gut

The starting point for achieving your ideal figure is a gut microbiome that works together as well as possible. If there is an imbalance between fattening bacteria and figure-flattering bacteria, the first step is to restore balance.

2. Feed the friendly bacteria

The "figure-flattering" bacteria love apple pectin. A diet rich in fibre or special fibre mixtures are therefore the perfect food source for these intestinal bacteria and ensure that they feel at home in the gut.

3. Embrace small lifestyle changes

Include more of certain foods that can stimulate your metabolism in your meals. These include protein-rich foods such as legumes, yoghurt, lean meat, and eggs: the body needs more energy to process protein, and you will feel fuller for longer.

Make gentle movement part of your day! Regular brisk walks, take the stairs before getting in a lift, or even try parking your car a little further away from the shops or office!
