As an extreme late bloomer, Simone Kumhofer started her triathlon career at 29 years of age. Just four years later, she became the Austrian middle distance champion and European champion. 1. Roughly 80% of the immune system lies in the intestines!
A strong immune system is essential for every endurance sport. Since we weaken the immune system after every intense session, only athletes who can regularly and consistently train (without getting sick), will be successful in the long run.
2. Eating the right foods is essential for sports!
If you train so much in a week, that you burn an additional 5.000 kcal, then you can barely cover your intake of micronutrients (vitamins, trace elements, amino acids, fatty acids, vitaminoids, minerals) through normal food! Only if you have healthy intestines that work well, can you actually metabolise the food you ingest and transport it to the cells. That is why it is so important to keep your intestines healthy and to ensure the right bacterial colonisation.
As mentioned above, the intestines are responsible for resorption, and that is precisely why regeneration is so important! And because regeneration is just as important as the training itself, I have to make sure I have fit intestines so that I can also recover! Nowadays, we know that there are bacterial strains that have a positive influence on muscle synthesis.
4. Hormonal balance
Even our hormones are partially produced in the intestines and are dependent on a stable microbiota (the entirety of all microbes). These include, among others, the happy hormones dopamine and serotonin as well as the sleeping hormone melatonin. The precursor molecules for the serotonin production in the brain are mainly produced in the intestines. This is paramount for me as an athlete since it not only influences my daily mood but also has an impact on my general mindset – to have the determination and motivation to push the boundaries of my body. Melatonin is also critical for my sleep – a decisive factor in my performance!
5. About my intolerances
Back in the day, I didn’t tolerate a lot of foods. My first instinct was to avoid all the foods that caused my symptoms, but it didn’t treat the cause! Usually, secondary causes, i.e., non-hereditary intolerances in the intestines, that arise due to the high training intensity are to blame. In my opinion, it makes more sense to treat the cause; something I recommend to everyone, not just my athletes.
